Understanding how substances, both chemical and natural can impact our health and well being is very important. In the Naturally Savvy Radio Show Recently, Savvy founder Andrea Donsky and co-host Naturally, Lisa Davis spoke with leading ‘Safe Beauty’ expert David Pollock for some advice about what to watch out for when choosing personal care products.
If there is any question that you may be putting harmful ingredients on your body, Pollock tells us that “in Europe, they’ve controlled or prohibited 1100 ingredients, but in the U.S. ’s only 11.” A designated difference. We love this list from Beautycounter with “The Never List” of chemicals you will not find in their products. One of the most dangerous chemicals ubiquitously found in personal care products is 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen acknowledged by the FDA. These elements are found in everything, from shampoos and body washes to toothpaste and shave gels. All 5 of the cancer-causing chemicals are manufactured through a process called ethoxylation which produces dangerous 1,4-dioxane as a by-product.
What is interesting, disheartening yet, is the known truth that with one additional step, manufacturers can clean 1,4-dioxane, making the component safe. Unfortunately, much like many aspects of modern life, cost trumps health. Most natural health companies choose choice ingredients, than opting for the cleanup stage of the ethoxylation process rather.
In part, this is due to the fact that, as is the situation of the -eth elements, these particular substances are simply just not required to produce a quality product. The -eth ingredients are surfactants, most used as foaming providers commonly. While the public is generally used to foaming action, and many think about this a sign that the product is ‘doing its job’, in fact, there are cleansers that are equally effective without this ‘showy’ foaming action.
Think dishwashers and laundry machines. Both are effective and powerful cleaners, however, there would be many broken flooring if the cleaning brokers in these machines produced foam. Foam is simply not an indication of better cleaning action and is a great example these dangerous chemicals are simply just not necessary. David Pollock’s top 5 substances to avoid in personal maintenance systems is an excellent starting place for those seeking to tidy up their personal care routine.
Consider health in the long term when choosing personal care products – some more dollars spent now may end up saving you much more in the foreseeable future. The makeup received many compliments from relatives and buddies. Kelly is definitely a diligent and talented makeup artist. Kelly, Priscilla and Nadia were this amazing team! I booked the wedding day makeup and hair service with Kelly, for me myself, my mom and my 9 bridesmaids. I also employed Kelly to do my makeup/hair touchup. They did an awesome job on making all my bridesmaids looking fabulous! And the makeup for me and my mom are just perfect! Kelly is so professional.
She adopted me to the church ceremony and touched up my makeup and hair prior to the ceremony, and after the ceremony prior to the formal photos, and one last time before we leave to the reception venue! My day wouldn’t have been this perfect without you Kelly! Kelly is very attentive to listens and details to all of your wants, needs, and worries.
