Panasonic scientists have worked on fixing some of the apparent weaknesses in the U.S. National Weather Service performance (GFS model). They claim that their forecasts aren’t only than the official US GFS model better, but almost equal to that of the vaunted ECMWF. I’ve talked to the principle scientist at Panasonic, Neil Jacobs, and he has shared some of the verification statistics, which look good.
I informed him the only path to prove they have the world’s best global model is always to share the forecasts and let a neutral third party verify them. He agreed to do so, including sharing the forecasts with the University of Washington. I doubt he would do that if their forecasts weren’t as skilled as they claim. THE UNITED STATES Air Force has abandoned the US GFS model, saying that it was inferior to the UKMET office model, that your AF will change to. So the National Weather Service’s global model is dropping behind international leaders AND an exclusive sector firm you start with the same NWS model.
Even the united states military is abandoning it. Can it get any worse? It can. The U.S. Congress offered the National Weather Service tens of huge amount of money for superb new computer systems, two CRAY XC-40s: one used for procedures, and the other for back-up and development. Unfortunately, the operational computer is being lightly used, using its vast capacity not being applied effectively to make critically needed improvements in U.S. Key Deficiencies in U.S.
So how come US operational global weather prediction dropping behind the market leaders? Some of the problems with U.S. Panasonic are no top secret (and Panasonic should be commended for allowing the community know what they may be doing). 1. The National Weather Service GFS has starkly second-rate physics, which means the descriptions of essential physical procedures in the atmosphere. For example, the GFS model is utilizing a primitive, two-decades old microphysics scheme (the program explaining how clouds and precipitation work).
