Folks who get treatment from a stem cell center could be spending their money on what portions to snake essential oil, a new research warns. Doctors administering stem cells may have no knowledge in the problem they’re trying to take care of, and the cells themselves might be produced from questionable or discredited resources — if the procedure includes any stem cells whatsoever. Emma Frow. She is an assistant teacher of natural and health systems engineering at Arizona State University in Tempe.
Dodgy stem cell treatments can be dangerous. Three folks have been blinded by stem cell shots intended to treat their macular degeneration, Frow said, while other instances have raised malignancy concerns. November In, the FDA released a warning notice to San Diego-based Genetech after a dozen patients in three says were hospitalized with serious bacterial infections after receiving shots of umbilical wire blood purportedly including stem cells.
The products were tainted with E. coli and other dangerous bacteria. Colleagues and Frow determined 169 stem cell clinics in the southwestern United States. They catalogued the treatments on offer and the medical personnel staffing each center. About a quarter of the treatment centers concentrated only on stem cell treatments. The analysis showed that stem cell clinics are controlled by a wide variety of health care employees.
Nearly three-quarters of employees at treatment centers that focus exclusively on stem cells are doctors with either an M.D. D.O. level, researchers said. They discovered that 14 percent of employees were either chiropractors or naturopaths; 7 percent had some other medical qualification; 5 percent got a graduate degree; and 2 percent experienced unspecified qualifications.
But even completely credentialed doctors might not be specialists in the conditions that their treatment centers promise to take care of, research workers said. Providers administering stem cells had a wide range of specialties, including family practice, inner medication, anesthesiology, general surgery, cosmetic surgery, dermatology, sports medicine, acupuncture and herbal medicine. Fat tissue was the stated source of stem cells for almost two-thirds of the clinics, according to the study. Fat-derived stem cells were used to take care of an array of illnesses, including neurodegenerative disorders, heart problems, gastrointestinal complaints, diabetes and muscular dystrophy.
Treatments derived from fat tissue may need FDA acceptance, and nothing has been granted, analysts said. If you are interested in stem cell therapy, spread treatment centers that promote the treatments as a question drug, experts recommended. Leigh Turner, a co-employee teacher at the University of Minnesota Center for Bioethics in Minneapolis. Frow offered a series of questions that individuals considering stem cell treatment can ask: – Just how many different conditions will the center offer to take care of with stem cells? May be the clinic participating in a formal, signed up medical trial using stem cells to take care of your unique condition?
The FDA has been saying for years that it plans to get actively engaged in legislation of stem cell clinics, but Turner isn’t holding out hope. The brand new study shows up in the Aug. 13 problem of the journal Stem Cell Reports. More information The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has more about stem cell remedies.
